Sugar Beet Nightmare

On news of British Sugar’s plans to close its factories at York and Alscott in Shropshire, the NAAC immediately wrote to the Minister David Miliband and the Chief Executive of British Sugar, Mark Carr expressing our concerns on behalf of contractors.

Sadly, the response from British Sugar did not give us great hope as they do not propose to relinquish quota and this therefore means that there is unlikely to be compensation for growers or contractors.

However, we continue to keep in touch with the situation which is potentially very serious for our members in the areas affected.

It is possible that a delegation may take our concerns to British Sugar and we will keep members informed of any further action planned.
