Take Care - Stay Alive!
In 2004/05 we had seven contractor deaths which is a tragic and unacceptable loss to
our industry. This must not be allowed to continue.
Not surprisingly, on analysis of the last ten years data, it shows that the highest number of deaths to the self employed and employed occurred during August, September and October when our industry is operating at peak capacity. However, we urge all contractors to be aware of this risk and, whilst we know you will all get busy, overworked and under-pressure, do not let this cloud your judgement. Please be aware that it is often these pressure points that ‘force’ you into taking unnecessary risks, which may result in accidents. Do NOT become a statistic, it is simply not worth it.
Whilst on this issue, as we approach the school holidays, we must also be aware of the issue of children on farms. Again, the past ten years highlight that, tragically, there have been 31 deaths with 45% occurring in July, August and September. It is very difficult for us to know where children may be on farms, but again we must all be increasingly aware and on alert.
Whilst we do not want to depress you all, the full report, including brief descriptions of the accidents, is difficult but valuable reading - if only to highlight how these dreadful and often avoidable accident can occur.
The NAAC wants to see you and your employees working safely over the busy summer period and we urge you not to take any unnecessary risks.
