SHEEP SHEARERS LIMITED ENTRY TO UK?
As speculation continues on how sheep shearers may be affected
by proposals to cap migration limits, the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC) is
preparing to meet the UK Border Agency to discuss the best way forward.
Jill Hewitt NAAC Chief Executive said, ‘The UK Border Agency assures us that no decision has yet been
taken about how the proposed limits on non-EU immigration limits will affect shearers. However, they are keen to
continue working with the sector and, as the representative organisation for shearing contractors, the NAAC will be
lobbying hard to ensure the regular seasonal influx of shearers is not disrupted by new laws.’
Two consultations are currently underway by the UK Border Agency and Migration Advisory Committee to
decide how best to limit non-EU immigration numbers into the UK.
The NAAC will keep its members and shearing contractors up-to-speed on how
changes may affect shearers applying for entry clearance.

- Founded in 1897, the NAAC is the representative organisation for contractors in the UK who supply all types of land-based services to farmers, government, local authorities, sports and recreational facilities.
- The NAAC estimates that 500 shearers usually come to the UK from overseas. Of a total population, the overseas shearers cover approx. 20-25% of our national flock – a total of 5-6million sheep each year. Without these shearers we risk serious animal health problems with fly strike, which in the worst cases may result in death.
- Sheep shearers are currently listed on the Migration Advisory Committee’s skills shortage list.
