FOOT AND MOUTH: NAAC WARNS CONTRACTORS TO BE VIGILANT
The National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC) today warned its members and other contractors to be vigilant and take every possible biosecurity precaution, following the outbreak of foot and mouth. Information has been circulated to all members advising that farms should only be visited if necessary and that strict biosecurity measures must be put in place.
In the light of Government advice, contractors are reminded to follow Defra guidance on biosecurity (link: http://www.defra.gov.uk/footandmouth/) and to avoid visiting farms with livestock wherever possible.
Jill Hewitt, Chief Executive for the NAAC commented, Our members are responsible professionals, but until we are all fully aware of the limits of the outbreak then we must do everything in our power to ensure that any further spread of the disease is prevented.
We are advising contractors that livestock operations such as shearing, dipping and sheep scanning are currently prohibited until a licensing system is in place for contractors. In addition, foraging and muck spreading operations are restricted in the protection and surveillance zones.
It is vital at this time that the industry works together to control and eradicate this disease and all contractors must be extra vigilant.
Contractors must contact their customers before visiting any farm and avoid all unnecessary visits: all vehicles, equipment and personnel must be cleaned and disinfected when entering and leaving a farm.
