As the UK prepares for a staycation this year, we are likely to see even more traffic on our roads in July and August when it will be peak season for many contractors and farmers. When preparing for a safe harvest, it is vital to make sure all staff are fully trained and briefed on protocol on the roads.
Mobile phones must not be used on the highway, unless hands-free, and it is a good idea to advise all drivers to avoid using even hands-free phones when on public roads. Not only are tractor drivers highly visible, but they must remain fully in control of their vehicle, and it is essential that their focus remains firmly on the road and other road users to keep everyone safe.
Dashcams in all vehicles is also recommended. In a recent presentation by PC Dan Cox, Road Safety Officer, Avon and Somerset Police, he suggested that all agricultural vehicles should be protecting themselves on the roads by having dashcams fitted. In his force alone they are convicting more than 100 drivers a month from dash cam footage alone and it is a sensible precaution to make certain that any accidents are recorded. Dashcams can offer protection, potentially reducing insurance premiums and providing back-up if faced with false or unfair liability claims.
